2004 Summer Camp
Camp Tahuaya

Dates:   June 6-12, 2004
Cost:   $155.00
Signup Deadline:   May 24, 2004
Money Due:   May 24, 2004

Camp Tahuaya has the largest natural spring in Texas and has a rich lore of history. The sparkling springs attracted the camps and burial grounds of prehistoric Plainview Man, and later the Native Americans of several tribes. It has known the Spanish Conquistadors who built their forts and, according to legend, buried their gold. The Old Military Road and the Shanklin Mill brought thousands of wagons to the spring, carving deep wheel ruts in the stone by our lake. The stone fences, plentiful arrowheads, Military Road, and millrace ruins are visible reminders of Camp Tahuaya’s frontier heritage.

Canoeing and Kayaking
We have 40 canoes and a dozen kayaks that you can take out on the lake, in one of the most beautiful settings you’ll find in any Texas camp. A great place to learn to paddle!

High Adventure Programs
All Longhorn Council high adventure programs are available to older youth and adults from units camping at Worth Ranch, Camp Tahuaya, or Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. Crews of older youth and adults may do the unique and exciting Chisholm Trail Adventure on Lake Bridgeport at Sid Richardson. You can send patrols on our Brazos River Canoe Trip 50–miler, based at Worth Ranch. Individual youth and adults may spend a week learning wakeboarding at the Steele Island Aquatics Base. All high adventure programs require a separate reservation and deposit.

Baden Powell Program
Camp Tahuaya’s premier program! We challenge your first year campers to complete requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class, and give them the opportunity to complete the First Aid merit badge. The Baden Powell Program is a half–day program that is offered both in the morning and in the afternoon.

Campsite Cooking Option
A popular option! Your Scouts may elect to cook some of their own meals in their campsite. Coordination with the Program Director is all that is required. Be sure to make arrangements a minimum of 24 hours before you wish to cook. Scouts can complete cooking requirements for rank advancement by cooking in the campsite.

Tahuaya Canoe Adventure
If your troop would like to spend your week of camp on the water, try our Pack and Paddle program. You can do canoe camping for patrols of older Scouts (age 14 and up) and adults. You’ll spend five days and four nights on nearby Stillhouse Hollow Lake. On Friday morning you’ll return to your final campsite and hike into camp. Units must meet the two deep leadership requirements for the trip. Scouts must have the Swimming and Canoeing merit badges prior to coming to camp. All participants must have a working knowledge of canoeing and be able to pass a swim test. Units MUST register for the Tahuaya Canoe Adventure before May 1st, 2003.

Camp Tahuaya Coup Stick

The Coup Stick is awarded daily to the Troop with the highest campsite inspection score. The unit is entitled to fly its unit flag on the central flagpole and to eat first. The winning Troop is expected to “improve” the Coup Stick each day. At the closing campfire on Friday the Coup Stick will be permanently awarded to the Troop with the highest total score for the week.

Climbing and Rappelling
Vertical Fun! You can climb on our cliffs to the limits of your endurance. We have outstanding climbing routes in the canyon below our spring-fed lake! You can take Climbing Merit Badge, or do an evening climb. The camp will provide all helmets, ropes, and climbing equipment.

C.O.P.E.

C.O.P.E. challenges each participant to reach beyond their normal expectations and limits and discover new things about himself. Both team building and individual challenges are included in the Challenge Course program. This is a great teambuilding experience for your older patrol or Venture Crew! Both adults and youth are welcome to do C.O.P.E. Youth participants MUST be at least 13 years old by January 1st or a graduate of the Seventh grade. There is an additional cost of $30 per participant. Participants MUST preregister by May 15th or COPE will not be offered.

Special Events

VIS (Very Important Scout) Dinner for your Troops’s SPL and youngest Scout, King Pee Wee competition, Scoutmaster Cobbler Cookoff competition, T.G.A. (Tahuaya Golf Association) Tournament (fabricate your own clubs and balls from natural resources found on camp), Camp Wide Games, Scoutmaster shootoff, and others.
