Everyone,
I hope everyone is having a great start to the holidays. I have several things to
bring to your attention.
Architecture Merit Badge
The Dallas Museum of Nature and Science is offering a sleep over for Boy Scouts to
earn some of the requirements for the Architecture Merit Badge. This will take
place from Saturday, January 31, 2009, at 7:00 PM until Sunday, February 1, 2009 at
9:30 AM. The deadline to sign up is tomorrow, December 24, 2008. Due to the short
frame, we will not do this as a troop. Please call Cori to sign up directly if you
are interested: (972) 201-0612. More information
here.
Troop Merit Badge College
On the January 2009 troop calendar, I have added a link for scouts to vote for the
merit badges they would like considered for the troop merit badge college. The
deadline to vote is January 1. These are not the merit badges they are signing up
for. This is only to see the interest and determine how many we can offer for the
college. Room size and availability as well as the instructors availability will be
the deciding factor. Merit badge college will be during extended length troop meetings
on January 26 and February 2 and a follow up day on March 2 as needed. Please vote
this week. Please note that all of the merit badge which we have a counselor is
listed, however, several are not practical for a classroom setting.
Summer Camp 2009
The sign up for summer camp 2009 will be added to the June 2009 calendar in a few
minutes. The troop is going to the Gorham Scout Ranch (formerly Camp Frank Rand)
in New Mexico. The camp itself is from June 21 - 27, 2009. Due to the distance
we are adding a day before and a day after for travel time. There are two options
for travel. Once is a charter bus. The best quote I have so far is $8400. With 50
folks going, that is almost $170 per person, including adults. This is not including
food along the way and the cost to take the trailer. All of the foot lockers will not
fit under the bus. The other option is to take person vehicles and spend the night
along the way. Due to BSA guidelines, we will not be able to make the trip in one day.
I am estimating that this cost will be about $100 per person, including adults. This
needs to be discussed at the next committee meeting on January 13, 2009. Please come and
voice your opinion. The first payment of $125 is due on February 8, 2009. This camp uses
a unique flexible scheduling for most merit badge. I am not sure how many they normally
sign up for up front, but it would be wise to read how the flexible scheduling works.
You can read it on their site
here.
Nuclear Science MB
For those that missed the first class for the Nuclear Science MB last month, there is
still a chance to earn it. The day trip down to the Comanche Peak power plant in Glen
Rose is scheduled for Saturday, January 31. If you have started, this is the day to finish
up, assuming the homework is done. If you have not started, you can come on the trip,
visit the museum and take the tour. We can have another class day to make up for the
first class. If you are working on the ranks of Second Class or First Class and do not
wish to work on the merit badge, you are welcome to go on the tour, if there are enough
drivers and seat belts. This would count as a non-troop/patrol regular night activity.
In any case, please be looking for the sign up sheet on the calendar and put your intentions
in the comments area when you sign up. If you are wanting to start the merit badge on this
trip, please see Mr. Hallstein or Mr. Purdy at the next meeting so we can get you a blue
card.
Merit Badge Classes at the Scout Museum
The National Scouting Museum is offering a few merit badge in January and February:
Citizenship in the Nation - January 10 and 31 from 2:30 - 4:30 PM
Fingerprinting - January 24 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM
Communications - February 7 and 28 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Emergency Preparedness - February 14 and 21 from 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
If the classes is listed on two days, you have to attend both day to earn the merit badge. If
you are interested, please register with the museum by calling (972) 580-2466. The cost
is $15 per merit badge. Classes fill up fast, I would register as soon as possible.
Next Troop Meeting
Finally, the next troop meeting is on January 5, 2009. There is a parent's meeting that night
to discuss the reschedule of the court of honor and the meal planning.
Have a great holiday!
THANKS! |
