Everyone,
It is hard to believe that summer is almost over! Wow it went by quickly.
I want to take a moment to welcome back the group that went to Philmont. We are glad you
made it back safely and hear that you had a great time. I believe the
members of the trek will be
sharing their experience with us at the next meeting.
Also at the next meeting we are scheduled to have Senior Patrol Leader nominations and I believe
others will be working on the Fly Fishing MB, and possibly a few new starts, depending on the
availability of the instructor.
New Merit Badge Counselors
We have several new merit badge counselors in the troop:
Jon Norris
Mr. Norris will be teaching the cycling merit badge for those that are interested. If you
would like to participate in this challenging merit badge, please let Mr. Norris know. We will need
to get participants registered in rides. Some of these rides will be organized by other groups, so
we need to know who wants to go so that plans are made far enough in advance. If enough scouts are
interested, we have a guest speaker that can come to a troop meeting and share his experience of
riding across America on his bicycle.
Jeff Nottingham
Mr. Nottingham has signed up for Architecture, Genealogy and Golf.
Alfonzo Gonzalez
Mr. Gonzalez has signed up for Electricity, Electronics and Public Speaking.
There may be another counselor signing up as a Music merit badge counselor. Check the web site
from time to time. As always, if you want to start one of these merit badges, or any other, please
see Mr. Jordan for a blue card and then speak with the counselor and they will get you on your way.
There have been several events added to the calendar:
August 16, 2008:
Bowling, Laser Tag and Games at Main Event.
This fun activity will be held at Main Event in Grapevine from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. The cost is $15
for each participant, including adults that want to play. However, there are only 4 adult slots.
If you which to play, please note that in the comments on the registration form. Drop-off and pickup
will be at Main Event. We need 30 participants to sign up.
September 6, 2008:
Troop 4 Court of Honor
The court of honor is a twice a year event where we recognize the achievements of the boys in
the troop. Rank Advancements are announced and merit badge that have been completed during the
previous 6 months are awarded. Occasionally, there are other awards given out as well. The meal
for this court of honor is still being finalized. Please check the web site for details very soon.
September 19, 2008:
Leadership Training Campout
This yearly campout is for all the scouts that hold leadership positions in the troop as well
as any one else that would like to come. The campout consists of short classes for the scouts
to build leadership skills as well as team building exercises and games. This is one campout where
the adults cook and clean (except personal dishes) for everyone, so plenty of adult participation is
appreciated. The campout takes place at Hills and Hollows in Denton.
October 17, 2008:
Score-O
Score-O is a timed orienteering event where the patrols plot out a route using a map and compass and
try to locate as many flags on the course as they can in the allotted time. The flags very in point value
depending on the difficulty to find and the distance from the starting line. The map is given out
30 minutes before the event starts and teams are penalized for returning late. This event is a lot of
fun. There will be training and practice courses before the event takes place.
